Today is the day that changed everything for us. On the 21st October 2013, we walk Donal into A&E in Sligo General and once the paediatric doctors saw Donal, we soon realised we were not dealing with a virus. It wasn’t until the following day that we were told that they suspected cancer and he was rushed to Dublin, but still we always think of the 21st as the start. It is strange really because in actual fact Donal’s cancer started along time before and he possible has had cancer all his young life.

It has been difficult approaching this day and wondering how I would feel about it. I think rather than using the day to look back at an indescribable year, I have decided to celebrate the day, to try and remember the first few dark months when our goal was to have one more Christmas with Donal at home. If someone had told us then that Donal would make it to 21.10.14 and be in such good shape, we would have struggled to believe them. If we had known then how many great days we have had at home, just normal days with both the boys (and Nelly the dog), we would have been delighted.

Of course there will be no cake or balloons, no cancer anniversary party, it will be another day in Hospital, this time for a bone scan.

Looking at Donal now gives us even more hope that he can keep going and maybe eventually the 21st October won’t be so significant to us, maybe birthdays, christmas and other anniversary’s will over shadow it so that it becomes just another day. A day to briefly remember what life was like before we walk into A&E, before cancer, but mainly to be thankful to make it to another year.
