How do you tell a 6 year old he is going to have surgery?

Date: February 6, 2014 Author: OWNER Categories: Donal's Mom's Blog 4

We have just received confirmation that they can go ahead with the surgery to try and remove the main tumour in Donal’s abdomen. We know this is good progress and it has to happen but it doesn’t make it any easier. Donal is getting stronger every day, he has even started riding his little bike again. It feels like we are getting the old Donal back, which makes it even harder. My heart says that he is getting better and I just want to wrap him up and keep him that way. My head says that we need to get the cancer out and until we do we will he won’t have a chance of really getting better, this cancer will just grow and reinvade his body. There is definitely a battle going on and there is no winner.

Donal is also getting wise to the signs, cream on his hands means a cannula will be next. Magic spray before an injection isn’t magic and when you have to change into a gown, he knows that you will be going to surgery and will wake up with sore bits.

He also asks questions and we try to be as truthful as possible without giving him to much information or to much time to become anxious, but it is fine line. We want him to continue to trust us and know that we are there fighting his corner. He has difficulty with communicating with the hospital staff ( initially he would just pretend to be asleep when they were in the room) so it is so important that he knows he can talk to us.

We will have to sit down and work out the best approach and hope that however we decide to tell him that it is enough for Donal to try and understand why this is happening to him and know that we love him very much.

You guys are dealing with something that no parent should ever have to deal with. It sounds like a fine line that you are treading exceptionally well. Final is lucky to have such great parents… Lets hope that he carries that luck on into the rest of his treatment… Fingers crossed for him…
